About This Book

Based on Burchard's large-scale research/coaching data, this book identifies six habits that statistically distinguish long-term high performers (people who sustain success, joy, and influence over time) from people who achieve short bursts of success without durability. Burchard's framing is explicitly practical and habit-based rather than trait-based — he argues high performance isn't about a personality type but about deliberately practicing specific behaviors. The six habits are: seek clarity (regularly clarifying who you want to be, how you want to interact with others, and what you want to accomplish — clarity has to be actively re-sought, not found once); generate energy (managing physical and mental energy deliberately through transitions, releasing tension, and setting intentions before tasks, since raw effort without energy management burns people out); raise necessity (connecting your work to a deeper "why" — identity, obligation to others, or a defined mission — so motivation doesn't rely on fleeting inspiration); increase productivity (focusing on the "prolific quality output" of a few high-value skills rather than spreading effort across everything, and protecting time for these skills); develop influence (teaching people how to think, not just what to do, and building trust through consistent generosity and challenge); and demonstrate courage (speaking truth, taking risks aligned with values, and acting despite fear, since Burchard's research found courage — not confidence — best predicts long-term achievement). Burchard emphasizes that these habits require ongoing practice — high performers aren't people who "arrived," but people who keep re-choosing these behaviors daily, even after achieving success, which is why so many high achievers burn out or plateau once they stop practicing the habits that got them there.
